Photography Reflector Stand
I am quite an amateur photographer. The idea of studio lighting is overwhelming me. I have one umbrella with flash and light stand. I have a background stand, and a hotshoe flash w/ softbox.
I was always taught to use natural whenever possible. I do most my photo shoots outdoors, and now I learn pro’s use umbrella flashes outdoor for portraits as well.
What are the essentials for a small home studio?I want to invest in another umbrella and flash(and stand),gels for the flashes, good muslin backgrounds and a reflector. Also would a wired/wireless flash activator be good for my umbrella flashes? Is this a good start?Anyone direct me to a good retailer and/or brand??
Can anyone direct me to a GOOD studio light resource to study up on the concepts?A good book I can buy? ANYTHING will help. thank you!
If I were starting over, knowing what I know now, this is what I’d get to complete your setup on a kind of barebones level. 2 monolights, 160 w/s or more with fully adjustable levels. 300 w/s is more ideal, but my 300 w/s have rarely seen more than 1/2 power. A couple of muslins would be good. White and black are staples, but something with a little more color is good. I bought a muslin from ebay that was not the color I expected it to be. It was way more girly. I thought it was going to be more orange and it ended up peachy and kinda pink. I use it a lot. Anyway, I’d get a couple simple slave strobes, the bulb kind work pretty well for background lights, but the recycle time is a little slow. Last thing is a hair light with a snoot and honeycomb. 120-150 w/s is plenty. Bigger is more versatile, but not necessary. Last but not least, a reflector and a stand. In a pinch, a good reflector can fill in for a light you don’t have. Or, you can use it on the gold side to provide a rich warm golden glow. And you can use it outside.
